January Update

17 Jan 2019

Happy New Year and welcome to the first newsletter of 2019.

At the end of an eventful year in 2018, over 30 sailors and their guests enjoyed the Christmas lunch at the Boat House Bistro. Many thanks to Jim Wood for organising this convivial event.

  • Club Racing

The Winter Freezer series started on Sunday 6th January with three back-to-back races in the morning. Why not come along this week and join in the fun, even if you’ve never raced before? The racers are a friendly bunch who are always happy to give helpful advice.

The full racing calendar for 2019 can be downloaded here .

  • Mariners of Bewl Winter Warmer – Saturday 19th January

Everyone is invited to come and hear how Will Street and Jonny Currell won Gold at the Para Sailing World Championship in their RS Venture Connect. Refreshments will be available. Click here for more details.

  • Bewl Blaster – Sunday 24th February

This event is open to all sailors, including visitors from outside Bewl – so please spread the word. There will be three handicap races with prizes afterwards. Read the Notice of Race here .

  • Annual General Meeting – Sunday 17th March at 14:00

I know it's not everyone's idea of a date to keep free but, without a small nucleus of volunteers, none of our activities would be possible. Some of the committee are retiring, so please let me know if you’re able to help out. The official notice will be issued shortly.

  • Flying Fifteen Open – Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th March

As part of the Southern Travellers Series this promises to be an exciting event, with competitors coming from as far afield as Chew Valley.

  • Wednesday Evening and Saturday Sailing Sessions – April to September

Following a successful trial in 2018, BSA intends to have a patrol boat out on the water from April to early September. The Pop-Up Cafe will also be open to act as a focal point for social sailing. We’re looking for volunteer helms and crews, so please send me an email if you’re able to help with this.

  • Mariners of Bewl (MoB)

MoB would like to thank everyone (individuals and organisations) for their generous donations to MoB funds. They plan to install the new removable hoist and pontoon extension in April.

  • Midweekers

On 2nd January the Midweekers enjoyed mulled wine and hot dogs at the Pop-Up Café, followed by a beautiful walk along the shores of Bewl Water. This sociable group meet up for a leisurely sail on alternate Wednesday mornings (from 10.30 to 12.30) throughout the winter, and the next session is on 23rd January 2019.

  • Windsurfing

The Bewl windsurfers can be found on the water on most windy days. Just turn up and join their WhatsApp group for more information.

  • Optimists

Please visit the Bewl Barbarians’ website for more information about coaching for children over the age of 7.

That's all for now and hope to see you down at Bewl on Sunday.
