Conditions at Bewl Water were perfect for Push The Boat Out. The sun was shining, the wind was gentle and the shimmering water was dotted with sailing boats.

Visitors were encouraged to try sailing in as many boats as they wished. Many families had never sailed before and may have been a little apprehensive initially. Everyone was fitted with a suitable buoyancy aid and assisted into the boat of their choice.

The boats were helmed by experienced Bewl Sailing Association sailors as well as professional helms from the neighbouring Outdoor Centre.

The variety of boats included a Lugger capable of taking people sailing with reduced mobility. In addition there were Wayfarers, a Wanderer, some Flying Fifteens, a Laser Stratos and a Laser. Children were able to try sailing in Optimists in a small bay removed from most boats. Altogether 177 visitors tried sailing on Saturday and everyone seemed to have a smile on their face at the end of the day.

One visitor said, "Thank you so much to all the friendly volunteers today at this event. My two sons had an absolute blast, trying the oppies, wanderers and wayfarers. .  . . . Ben is absolutely buzzing about his go at helming the Laser"

The Bewl Water management team offered a £30 reduction in fees to anyone joining on the day and at least five families took advantage of this generous offer.

The Outdoor Centre offers training to youths and adults and many visitors took their brochure.

Bewl Sailing Association looks forward to welcoming some of the visitors back during the summer.
